We started flying our Gulfstream GVII just a few months after it was certified and discovered that the autothrottles did not reliably engage using the techniques from previous Gulfstreams. The old technique was to bring the throttles up to an EPR setting and attempt to engage below 60 knots. That worked in the simulator because the engines spooled up evenly, but not in real life because spool up times were not always even. After a lot of trial and error, we figured out how to do it properly. This video is cited here: https://www.code450.com/blog/autothrottle-differences.
